Test-playing tour of India
by Sri Lanka (previous tour 1990-91) | When Pakistan cancelled their tour of India because
of fears over security during political tension between the two countries,
the Sri Lankan Board stepped into the breach and took up an invitation to
replace them on the tour. However, the Sri Lankan players were jaded after 18
months of non-stop cricket and the team was crushed by an innings in each of
the three Test matches. The only game the Sri Lankans won on the whole tour
was in reaching a revised target in the last one-day match at Jalandhar, when
de Silva was man-of-the-match. Bandula Warnapura, Sri Lanka's first Test captain, was
appointed the new cricket manager following the resignation of TB
Kehelgamuwa. The ban on the 1982 Arosa Sri Lankans' captain in South Africa
in 1982-83 was lifted in early 1990.
Though it was too late for Bandula to play again at a high level, he
was admitted him to cricket administration. His comment on the Indian Test
umpiring was "If we appear to have batted in a hurry, it is because our
batsmen wish to make the most of their short stay before the umpires do them
in." On 9 March 1994 the BCCSL
appointed a committee to enquire into results and investigate the team's
dismal performance, which was published later in the month. See report | Other

Q Colombo | Dulip Liyanage returned home
injured on 25 January. The players flew back to Colombo on Tuesday 22
February 1994. On 3 January the players had
notified the Board that they wished to remain in India at the end of the tour,
which was refused. So eleven of the players came into the arrivals lounge at Katunayeke International
Airport to abide by the ruling, and then
walked straight to the departure lounge and flew out again to play in some
benefit matches in India. | Time
