Test-playing tour of West Indies by South Africa
(February - March 2001)
The West
Indies Board would pay for only fifteen players but the South African
selectors pressed their Board to take a sixteenth player. Roger Telemachus would
join the squad after completion of his domestic commitments with Western Province - useful cover in the light
of Allan Donald’s recent injury record.
Five players and the physiotherapist were fined R10 000 for
smoking marijuana in their hotel room celebrating winning the series after the
fourth Test match in Antigua. Justin Kemp, Herschelle Gibbs, Paul Adams,
Andre Nel, Roger Telemachus and Craig Smith read out an apology on arrivial
home at Johannesburg.

series.

February and flew to London’s Gatwick Airport.
Arrived at Grantley Adams
International Airport, Barbados,
just before 4:30 pm on 2 March in transit for a flight to Guyana.
Roger Telemachus joined the tour party in Bridgetown.
Ken Jennings, the team's sports psychologist, arrived
in Georgetown
on Wednesday 7 March and selector Graeme Pollock on Thursday.
The one-day players Jonty Rhodes and Justin Ontong arrived in Jamaica on 22
April

Reinforcements
Nicky Boje flew home on Friday 13 Aprilto have immediate surgery on damage to his
left shoulder and to rest the patella tendinitis of his left knee.
Gulam Bodiwas selected to replace him
and was due to fly from England
to Jamaica
on Sunday 15 April when he broke a finger playing in Lancashire League match.
The selectors might have picked
Shafiek Abrahams but simply decided Paul Adams would stay with the squad.
•At Kensington Oval Shaun Pollock scored a
Test century (106* ) coming in at number nine.
•Jonty Rhodes became the first South African
to play in 200 one-day internationals
