November 2004) Eighth
Test-playing tour of Pakistan
by Sri Lanka (previous
tour 2001-02) | This tour came about when the International Cricket
Council ruled in May 2004 that Zimbabwe
would lose Test status for the rest of the year and Zimbabwe's visit to Pakistan was cancelled. The
Pakistan Cricket Board faced a financial crisis but Sri Lanka offered to fill the gap and play a
three-Test series and a triangular tournament with Zimbabwe who could still take
part in one-day internationals. Sri Lanka’s Chairman of Selectors had
become "frustrated" by the tour management group’s apparent
reluctance to give new players a chance.
His selection committee dropped Dilshan from the Test series to reduce
their options and force the inclusion of younger batsmen like Daniel, Kandamby
or Mubarak against weaker opposition. De Mel's interference was regarded as
divisive at a time when Atapattu had melded a strong team unity but the
selectors planned to build for the future and give younger players experience
while on tour. Karachi hosted a Test match for the
first time since May 2002 (when New Zealand had abandoned their
tour midway through because of a bomb blast). | Other
