Test-playing tour by Bangladesh. (April - May 2001) First Test-playing tour
of Zimbabwe by Bangladesh | The Test newcomer's first tour
brought defeat in both Test and one-day series but had its bright moments,
and the team made progress. At least Bangladesh forced the second Test match at Harare into the final day after suffering an innings
defeat in the first Test at Bulawayo,
but the one-day series was a humiliation. Left-armer Monjurul Islam
produced the best bowling figures in Bangladesh's brief Test history,
while Javed Omar Gullu became the first Test debutant in a hundred years to carry
his bat through an innings. He was named Man of the Match, despite his team's
innings defeat. Habibul Bashar was in good
form, too, with two half-century scores (64 and 76) in the second Test, but
commentator Ali Tehsin said of the rest: "The batsmen played in a
suicidal fashion from the beginning and lost their wickets quicker then the
scorers could change their names in the board". Apart from inexperience, their predicament
was in adjusting to new pitch conditions like the steeper bounce of Zimbabwean
wickets. | All Bangladesh
