| Bangladesh’s second Test tour. (August - September 2001) First Test-playing tour
of Pakistan and of Sri Lanka by Bangladesh (no previous visits to play Test matches) | Bangladesh Cricket Board president Saber Hossain
Chowdhury was also a deputy minister in Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's
government.
West Indies fast bowler Andy Roberts and Pakistani batsman Javed
Miandad were engaged to improve bowling and batting skills before the
tournament.
Bangladesh was under no illusions that it could compete with longstanding Test
opponents for the Asian Test Championship and expected to lose.
Coach Trevor Chappell said the target for his team was to draw matches.
"If my boys draw with the opponents, that will be our success." The
captain Naimur Rahman would not go that far: "We want to gain as much
experience from this tour as we can and hope to continue our improvement in
Test cricket."
There were two innings defeats. However, on his Test
debut Mohammad Ashraful scored 114 against Sri
Lanka at Colombo,
to become the youngest batsman to score a century in a Test match. His age was
uncertain but, whether it was 16 or 17, he easily eclipsed Mushtaq Mohammad's
previous youthful record.
