| Bangladesh’s third Test-playing tour (December 2001) First
Test-playing tour of New Zealand
by Bangladesh
(no previous tours) | The
tour was Bangladesh's
second to New Zealand
(having previously visited in 1997), and its first to go there as a
Test-playing nation. Changes
in the top leadership of the Cricket Board saw government-appointed tour
manager Afzalur Rahman Sinha (BCB Treasurer) and his assistant Tanjeeb Ahsan
Saad, another Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director, placed in charge of
the team only a couple of days before the tour. They took the place of the former
management team of Ahmed Sajjadul Alam and Mahmud Jamal. Arriving
in New Zealand
during an early summer spell of wet weather, the limited time for
acclimatisation and practice was curtailed further by rain. The Bangladeshis
were hopelessly under-prepared for the Test matches and were hammered by an
innings in both games. The
series had started optimistically. New Zealand were 51 for 4 on the first morning
of the First Test at Hamilton
but recovered and never lost control of the series afterwards. | All Bangladesh

| Postscript | Trevor Chappell’s contract as
coach was brought to a close in May 2002. Mashrafee
was vital to Bangladesh's
bowling hopes but injuries to his back and ankle lessened his impact in the
Tests and curtailed his participation in future Bangladesh tours. | | |
