| Bangladesh’s eighth Test tour. (January - March 2004 Second Test-playing
tour of Zimbabwe by Bangladesh (previous tour 2000-01) | In
January Dav Whatmore changed the practice of naming the captain first, and
then the team. Now, in the Australian practice, the team would be chosen and
the skipper picked from its ranks. Khaled
Mahmud was dropped and announced his retirement from international cricket,
which he was later persuaded to revoke. Under
a new captain, Habibul Bashar, the tour party spent a fortnight in Namibia
preparing for the tour with four warm-up matches. In
Zimbabwe there was defeat again in the Test series but Bangladesh won their
fourth official ODI, ending a run of 47 one-day defeats Mohammad
Rafique created such a commotion in reaction to his captain’s comments about
the promise shown by a rival spin bowling teammate, that the team management
sent him home from Harare

| Selection | The national team preparation camp began at Bangabandhu Stadium
on 4 January with 16 players, then Alamgir Kabir, Al-Shahriar and Manjural
Islam were added. There were two practice matches against the national under-19
team coached by Richard McInnes. At Dhaka on 11
January the touring team won by 117 runs, and at Savar on 17 January the team

Hossain Monir and Alamgir Kabir who returned home. On Sunday evening 14 March Mohammad Rafique was sent home early
from Harare
for disciplinary reasons. The team left Harare on 15 March
and arrived home at Dhaka
