The Pakistan Cricket Board prevented fast bowlers Umar Gul and Mohammad Asif from participating in English county cricket yet both suffered injuries that kept them out of the Test series.

Reinforcements

Yasir Arafat, 25, RFM,was sent to Kolkata whenUmar Gul was forced to return home after suffering a back muscle problem, and because Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Sami were ill.The original choice was for Rao Iftikhar Anjum, 26, RFM, but visa problems held him up so Arafat arrived at Kolkata at 8 am on 30 November, the morning of the second Test.  Iftikhar was finally sent to join the tour on 5 December (though the tour management were now asking for Abdur Rauf),.
