of England 2002 Captain: Sanath Jayasuriya | | | | | © Test Cricket Tours | | | Sri Lanka’s twenty-ninth Test tour
(April - July 2002) Fifth
Test-playing tour of England
by Sri Lanka (previous tour 1998) | Ajith Jayesekera, who served
30 years in the Sri Lanka
armed forces as an Air Commodore, was abruptly replaced in February 2002
after 14 months of successful team management. It was said that C T A Schaffter was brought in
because discipline was lacking on and off the field. Then towards the end of the tour Schaffter
himself learned that he was being dropped as manager. This was the first time Sri Lanka had been granted anything but a
one-Test series in England.
There would be three Test matches. The Sri Lankans arrived on the back of
nine consecutive Test match wins and aspired to taking revenge for England's victory in Sri Lanka in
2000-01, but could not maintain their record and lost the series 2-0. On a flat pitch at Lord's Sri Lanka scored 555 but, without Muralitharan
who was in Melbourne
having treatment for a dislocated shoulder, could not force a victory. England responded with two huge
victories in the remaining Test matches.
Jayasuriya had a poor tour as captain and opening batsman. | Other Sri Lankan Tours Previous tour Pakistan 2000-01 Next tour South Africa 2002-03 Next tour of England 2006 | | | Members of the Test tour party (18 + 2) Opening batsmen: Marvan

Jayawardene, Muralitharan, Hashan Tillakaratne Ruchira Perera and Eric Upashantha flew home. de Silva had just had £3000 sponsorship
money stolen from him. Daryl Foster, the bowling coach decided to leave the
tour as the Sri Lankan Board would not agree to some of his expenses. The main team left London on 16 July, and arrived home in arrival from London
with his team at the Bandaranaike International Airport
(Katunayake), Colombo, on Wednesday 17 July. | Time away from Sri Lanka 57 days
(21 April to 17 July) | | | Postscript | Aravinda de Silva's Test
career was all but over but he was given one more Test in front of his home
supporters against Bangladesh
in July 2002 when he scored a double century. Press allegations that Ruchira
Perera threw the ball were later reported by the umpires to the I.C.C. On 18 July Ajith Jayasekera was re-appointed manager
