Test-playing tour of West Indies by Australia
(February
- May 1991)
Having won the one-day series
by four matches to one, Australia
looked well-placed to challenge West Indies
for the unofficial world championship of Test cricket. But West Indies won
the second and fourth Tests by huge margins before Australia took a consolation
victory in the final Test. While the
West Indies' fast bowling established a dominance over the Australian
batting, the tourists' bowling attack - McDermott apart - was too ordinary to
present real problems on easy-paced Caribbean
pitches. The lack of harmony between the sides while on the pitch formed an
unfortunate impression of the series but this was Test cricket played hard.
Australia had
fared better in the Cable & Wireless one-day series, winning four matches
to one. The tour ended with the whole party flying to Bermuda
for a series of friendly matches.
