Test Cricket Tours - England to South Africa 2009-10

Tour of South Africa 2009-10              Captain :  Andrew Strauss

England’s 97th Test tour (November 2009 -

                 January 2010)

19th Test-playing tour by England to South Africa

   (previous tour 2004-05)

Because of fixture congestion and the constraints of the Future Tours Programme, the English and South African cricket authorities agreed to play four Tests instead of the traditional five. Hugh Morris, ECB director of cricket, described it as "a well-balanced tour".  There were 5 one-day internationals and six other preceding matches, providing practice at the start of the tour.

The one-day series was won 2-1 by England, although spoiled by heavy rain causing two matches to be washed out.

The Test series was shared one-all despite South Africa’s obvious superiority. England were fortunate to gain a draw in both the first and third matches through Onions and Collingwood resolutely holding out as England were nine wickets down and on the point of defeat. However, England roared back to take the second Test, Swann and Broad bowling the South Africans to an innings defeat. South Africa then hit back with their own innings victory in the final Test at Johannesburg.
