29th West Indies Test tour

Fourth Test-playing tour of Pakistan by West Indies

(October - November 1986)

West Indies embarked on their six month-long world tour with a charity match in Bombay, flying to Pakistan the next day.  It was the fourth Test tour of Pakistan by a West Indian side and the result - a one-all draw - was the same as in other series so they still had not yet won here.

The tour became possible after Pakistan came up with $325 000 guarantees

These Test matches were the first to be played in front of neutral umpires.

Return to West Indies

KarachiQ  Sharjah

Sharjah Q  Australia

On 26 November, after completing the Test series, the team flew from Karachi to Sharjah for the Champions Trophy which West Indies won, picking up a $32 000 prize.

On 5 December 1986 the selectors announced their team for the next leg of the tour (to Australia for a one-day series) as the players were flying out of Sharjah (approx 5 December - see Advocate

Peter Roebuck wrote in the SMH 9 February 1987 “Because of this air of tiredness, the cricket this month has not been inspiring …Probably the West Indies eliminated on Friday have been the  worst affected by these attitudes. On the road for 10 years already, this summer they’ve toured Pakistan and Sharjah, popped home and then been dragged off for these games, missing Christmas with their families… maybe they just need a rest.”

Patterson who returned home from Pakistan with a stomach ailment, and Butts were not required for the Australian one-dayers because Holding and Garner were recalled into the 15-man squad

The West Indies would go on to New Zealand for a Test series after the limited-over games in Australia.

On his return to Gatwick Airport, London, Greenidge was affronted to be searched for drugs.
