Test Cricket Tours - Zimbabwe to New Zealand 2000-01

Tour of  New Zealand 2000-01          Captain: Heath Streak

Zimbabwe’s thirteenth Test tour

Third Test-playing tour of New Zealand by Zimbabwe

  (December 2000-

              January 2001)

Note:  The tours of India and of New Zealand in 2000-01 ran consecutively and are really a single tour but, to allow greater detail, are described here as two separate tours.

Zimbabwe had lost its previous series against New Zealand on home turf but now won its first one-day series away from home by beating New Zealand 2-1.

Zimbabwe toured Australia as well as New Zealand

The absence of Neil Johnson and Murray Goodwin was felt more keenly than it had been in India where Flower batted so well.

Seamer Gus Mackay was added to the team for New Zealand. He flew out on Saturday 16 December to replace the off-form Henry Olonga, but Olonga played in New Zealand until the one-day series.

Olonga was sent home from Melbourne to Johannesburg.

Grant Flower and Dick Viljoen broke fingers in New Zealand, which prevented them from playing inthe Test match. Grant Flower who fractured his index finger while fielding against Canterbury stayed with the team but was not fit to play again until the tri-series against Australia and the West Indies beginning in Australia in January.

Return to Zimbabwe

Perth   Q    Harare

The last game in New Zealand was on 7 January

After the New Zealand section of the tour, the team flew to Brisbane to participate in the Carlton and United tri-series  (and were given a cruise on Jeff Thomson’s boat Queenslander, delayed until the evening because of a late flight from NZ).

The Zimbabweans flew home from Perth on 5 February 2001.

After a taxing 3½-month tour that started on the Indian sub-continent, they arrived back at Harare International Airport at midday on Tuesday 6 February.   Grant Flower, Viljoen and Madondo returned with broken fingers and Whittall, Streak and Murphy with knee injuries.

Heath Streak stayed in Australia to attend the ICC meeting with other Test captains and returned later.

Postscript

John Ward’s summary was that “the gap between Andy Flower and Heath Streak on the one hand, and most of the rest, continues to widen. These two have by their incredibly hard work, determination and sheer professionalism made themselves into world-class cricketers. Most of the others, many of them very experienced by now, have scarcely moved on”.  (www.espncricinfo.com/allrounder/content/story/99153.htmlý)
