| Tour of
England 2006 Captain:
Mahela Jayawardene | | | | | © Test Cricket Tours | | | Thirty-eighth Test tour (May - July 2006) Sixth official Test-playing tour of England by Sri Lanka (previous tour 2002) | Sri Lanka surprised
England
by making a clean sweep of the one-day international series, the first time
they had achieved this on tour. A world-record opening partnership of 286
runs between Jayasuriya (152) and Tharanga (109) in the fifth match at
Headingley gave them their historic 5-0 whitewash. The controversially
recalled Sanath Jayasuriya was named as man of the series. Earlier
the visitors had won the first T20 international between the countries and,
more significantly, had shared the Test series. At Lord’s Sri Lanka
followed on, more than 350 behind, but survived for almost 14 hours and 200
overs as seven of their batsmen chipped in with fifties. They lost at
Edgbaston, but on a dry Trent bridge pitch
Muralitharan took 8 wickets for 70 runs as England were dumbfounded by his
doosra. For the second consecutive Test he had taken more than ten wickets in
the match. Sri Lanka later
wrapped up their European tour by beating the Netherlands 2–0 in the one-day
series. The team shattered the one-day world record by piling on 443-9 in
their 195-run win over the Netherlands. | Other

P Jayawardene, Samaraweera, Vandort and Zoysa left the tour group before the
ODI series started. Mubarak and Lokuarachchi took Muraltharan's place for the tour of Holland. After
the two matches in Netherlands, the Sri Lankan party returned
to England
on July 8. The record-breaking team flew back to Sri Lanka with Qatar Airways from
London Heathrow. The plane arrived in Colombo,
via Doha, the
airline’s operational hub, on 10 July.
During
their stopover in Doha, the players were
signing autographs and posing for pictures with fans at Doha
International Airport
enroute to Colombo,
where they received another huge reception soon after arrival on Flight
QR302. | Time away from Sri
Lanka 81 days (20 April to 10 July) | | | Postscript | The team
was given a heroes' welcome after their most successful ever tour of England.
Manager
Michael Tissera said “in England
they played exceptionally well. That come back at Lord’s was another turning
point. That match was gone. It was amazing how these fellows batted. Mahela,
Kulasekara, Vaasy, Maharoof, everybody chipped in and saved that game. That
was great. Then we won the game at Trent
Bridge and levelled the
series. And in the ODIs, my goodness, we just thrashed them. At Headingly,
they got 330 and thought the game was won. Then Sanath and Upul added 280 for
the first wicket in some 30 overs. I think we won with something like 11
overs to spare with two or three wickets down. That was amazing. We were also
fortunate in England
as it was a dry summer and the conditions helped our spinners.” (www.island.lk 18 February 2011) | | | | Other
