After winning the first Test the Indians looked likely to break a 15-year jinx of not winning a Test series outside the subcontinent, but faltered in the second Test. Zimbabwe won a thrilling victory at Harare.

John Wright was appointed coach on 2 November 2000, ahead of Greg Chappell and Geoff Marsh.

Ganguly was picked as skipper on 21 April. He joined the selectors and coach John Wright at Bangalore on 17 May to pick the 15-member team.

The names of 25 probables for the tour of Zimbabwe were announced on 22 April. They assembled in Bangalore on 13 May for a five-day preparatory camp.

Unavailable:  Anil Kumble (shoulder injury), Reetinder S Sodhi.

Not selected among 25 probables:  Yuvraj Singh, V Sehwag, D Mongia, Mohammed Kaif, A Ratra, Deep Dasgupta, Rakesh Patel, Harvinder Singh, Sarandeep Singh, and Rahul Sanghvi.

The team assembled in Mumbai and left the airport on Thursday 25 May 2001, arriving at the new Harare International Airport at midday on Friday afternoon after a tiresome journey. 

They began their acclimatisation with a strenuous workout within hours of arrival. After attending a function at the Indian High Commission, they left for Mutare by road for their opening match.

Javagal Srinath opted out of the one-day series.

Harvinder Singh (Rlys), D.Mongia (Pj), V.Sehwag (D) and R.S.Sodhi (Pj) were brought in for the one-day tournament

Bahutule, Das, Ramesh (back injury in any case) returned to India on 20 June.

Srinath, Bahutule, Das and Ramesh were not required after the Test series and left for India on 20 June 2001.

The team left Harare for home on Sunday 8 July, and reached Mumbai early on the morning of 9 July 

John Wright left Harare for London and re-joined the Indian team a week later.

Back in Mumbai, Ganguly returned to Kolkata where he was kept under armed protection because of kidnap threats by Kashmiri terror group Lashkar-e-Toiba.
