Test-playing tour of New Zealand by Pakistan
(October 2009 - January 2010) |
The New Zealand series was originally scheduled to be held in Pakistan but relocated after the Kiwis refused to tour owing to the security fears. The ODI and 20/20 series was shifted to the United Arab Emirates and both teams would then fly to New Zealand for three Tests. Younis Khan resigned the Pakistan captaincy after claims (which he strongly denied) were made that his side had deliberately underperformed in the Champions Trophy. The PCB rejected his resignation and he remained captain in the UAE but It was heard that Younis had lost control of the side after quarrels with Afridi, Shoaib Malik and other senior players. He then requested a rest from cricket so Mohammad Yousuf was called upon to lead the side in New Zealand and retained the lead for Australia, while Younis gradually returned to Quaid-e-Azam matches. |

Selectors |
Iqbal Qasim (Chief selector). The panel as announced the previous July included Saleem Jaffer, Ijaz Ahmed, Azhar Khan, Mohammad Ilyas and two co-opted members, Asif Baloch and Farrukh Zaman. Ijaz Butt was a strong influence on the composition of the touring sides for which he was criticised.

Selection |
Unavailable: Mohammad Asif was not available for the limited overs part of the tour as he would not be granted entry to UEA owing to his detention on drugs charges and being deported in June 2008. Younis Khan would surrender the captaincy to Shaid Afridi for the two ODIs and then resume as captain for the Tests in New Zealand.
Tour Party to New Zealand announced: 22 October 2009 Not selected : Misbah-ul-Haq; Sohail Tanvir (he had a knee injury in any case).
The following were selected only as members of the ODI and 20/20 squad in UAE: Shahid Afridi, Khalid Latif, Abdul Razzaq, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Rao Iftikhar Anjum, Wahab Riaz, Sohail Tanvir
Withdrawal : Younis Khan requested a break from international cricket and missed the New Zealand tour.
On 11 November Mohammad Yousuf was appointed captain for the New Zealand tour with Kamran Akmal as his deputy. The door was left open for Younis Khan to resume the captaincy in Australia but he did not confirm his availability for Australia so he was left out of that series, too. Yousuf asked the selectors to pick Misbah-ul-Haq and, although they initially refused, they sent him after the first Test in Dunedin. This brought the Test squad up to eighteen in number.
Tour Party to Australia announced : 8 December 2009 Shahid Afridi took over as captain for T20, as well as vice-captain for ODI matches, in Australia.
