Selection

Tillakaratne Dilshan was appointed Sri Lanka's captain for all three formats on 18 April.

Unavailable : Muttiah Muralitharan, who retired from international cricket at the end of the World Cup; Lasith Malinga (injured knee). Sri Lankan Cricket asked Malinga not to continue playing in the IPL but to return home for a rehabilitation programme.

The opener Upul Tharanga was ruled out of consideration after failing a drugs test during the World Cup.

Angelo Mathews had a quadriceps muscle injury.

Tour Party Announced :  20 April 2011.  The names of sixteen players approved by the Hon Minister of Sports were given out.  The selection panel failed to name a vice-captain.

Not selected:  Sachithra Senanayake.

Additions to the team:   Fast bowler Farvez Maharoof (NCC), 26, and wicket-keeper Kaushal Silva (SSC), 24, were called up to cover for players absent in the IPL.  Maharoof had not played for Sri Lanka for four years.

Sri Lanka's cricket team left  Colombo on Tuesday 10 May 2011 without its captain Dilshan, though he cut his ties with the IPL early enough to play in the first tour match. He arrived in England on 13 May.  However, Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Randiv, Dilhara Fernando and Thisara Perera were not able to join the team in England until ..........  owing to their commitments to the Indian Premier League.

Sanath Jayasuriya, S H T Kandamby, F D M Karunaratne, KMDN Kulasekara, S L Malinga, A D Mathews and BMAJ Mendis joined the team for the one-day series and then D Prasad was sent over, too, to replace the injured Dilhara Fernando.

Reinforcements

Opening baysman Malintha Warnapura and fast bowler Saminda Eranga were set to cover for Dilshan and Nuwan Pradeep but they travelled to England with the main team after all, so Warnapura and Eranga were not required.

Nuwan Pradeep sustained damage to his anterior cruciate ligament after treading on the ball and flew home at the end of May, and Dilhara Fernando injured his knee, so on 24 May Farveez Maharoof was retained in the team.

Tillekeratne Dilshan fractured his thumb and missed the third Test but was fit for the one-day internationals. Samaraweera was captain against Essex and Sangakkara who stood down after the World Cup final, took on the captaincy when Dilshan was unable to play in the third Test. Thilina Kandamby captained in the T20 international at Bristol.

Dilhara Fernando sustained an injury in the 3rd Test and went home, On 22 June it was announced that Dammika Prasad was replacing him for the limited-overs series.

London  Q   Colombo

Nuwan Pradeep flew home injured at the end of May.

Herath, P Jayawardene, Paranavitana, Samaraweera, Thirimanne and Welegedera went home after the Test series.  Dilhara Fernando also went home, missing the one-day series because of injury.

Finances

After overspending when hosting the Cricket World Cup in 2011 the Sri Lankan board was short of money, saying that the ICC still owed about £3 million.  In the meantime contracted Sri Lankan players were not paid their salaries.

Postscript

Stuart Law resigned as interim coach after the T20 victory at Bristol.  Rumesh Ratnayeke became the new coach for the forthcoming home series against Australia. Steve Mount became the new physio in August.
