Test Cricket Tours - India to South Africa & Zimbabwe 1992-93

Tour of South Africa & Zimbabwe 1992-93

        Captain: Mohammad Azharuddin

India's 32nd Test tour

First Test-playing tour of  South Africa and of Zimbabwe by India

 (October 1992 -

          January 1993)

In April 1992 India accepted an invitation to tour South Africa, and on 1 July the ANC sanctioned the tour. The Indians were the first official national side to visit South Africa for 22 years. Before that, India agreed to play Zimbabwe on its debut in Test cricket, en route to Johannesburg.  Said tour manager Amrit Mathur “This is one of the most significant tours India have undertaken. We know we are making history.”

South Africa won the ‘Friendship Series’, their first home Test matches since March 1970.  This was also the first series in which television replays were used in Test cricket and third umpires after the BCCI made an unexpected volte face and agree with UCBSA’s proposal to have a third umpire. However, the tour failed to attract interest among the African community
