Chairman Dilip Vengsarkar, who was due to travel to South Africa to be with the Indian team in the Tests, met with Venkatapathy Raju, Bhupinder Singh Sr, Sanjay Jagdale and Ranjib Biswal, to pick the squad of 16. Niranjan Shah, the BCCI secretary, was present as convener of the meeting.

Unavailable Yuvraj Singh unfit (knee ligament injury) so D Karthik was chosen.  Agarkar passed a fitness test (VRV Singh was in reserve).

Reinforcements

 

Munaf Patel hurt his ankle early on the tour and sat out of three ODIs and the first two Tests.   The team management and chief selector D.B.Vengsarkar already in South Africa asked the BCCI to send Delhi fast bowler Ishant Sharma to South Africa but, as Sharma was readying himself to leave, the decision was reversed.

Taking a South African Airways flight from Johannesburg on 7 January, the team landed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International airport in Mumbai at 12.30 in the early hours of Monday 8 January 2007.  Rahul Dravid had to wait for his mislaid baggage while the coach and team went to the Hyatt hotel. 

Chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar arrived back from South Africa one day after than the team.
