Test Cricket Tours - India to West Indies 1982-83

Tour of West Indies 1982-83        Captain: Kapil Dev

Twenty-second Test tour

Fifth Test-playing tour of  West Indies by India

 (February – May 1983)

A three-nil defeat to Pakistan made it inevitable that Gavaskar would lose the captaincy. Although on this tour West Indies beat India by two Tests to nil, new captain Kapil Dev did well enough to retain his position for the forthcoming World Cup one-day series in England, where he led India to victory in the final.

The star of the Test series in the Caribbean was Mohinder Amarnath, virtually beginning a second career and widely being described as the best player of fast bowling in the world. He scored 598 runs at an average of 66, with six scores over 50.

Instead of a second official to assist Hanumant Singh, there was a 17th playing member of the touring party. However, there was no room for Gundappa Viswanath who, after ten consecutive tours, was not picked and missed his first tour since West Indies in 1970-71. The batting also lost the experience of Sandeep Patil who was not available because he was taking part in a film. Patil's film, "Once You Were Unknown", included appearances from Kirmani and Sandhu as well.

Return to India

On 5 May Kapil Dev, Amarnath and Madan Lal left immediately for England.

Some members of the touring party (B S Sandhu, Maninder Singh, Arun Lal, A D Gaekwad, Kiran More, Syed Kirmani and Sivaramakrishnan) made a visit to America as guests of the United States Cricket Association to play against Indian expats and residents of Washington.

They returned to Bombay from London on 11 May.  On the same flight was Kapil Dev who had been training with Northamptonshire, but now rushed to get the evening connection to New Delhi to attend a selection committee meeting choosing the 1983 World Cup team.

Vengsarkar and Shastri got back to India on Sunday 15 May, while Gavaskar and manager Hanumant Singh arrived home on 22 May.  Malhotra and Venkat?
