Test Cricket Tours - South Africa to Australia 1993-94

Tour of Australia 1993-94             Captain: Kepler Wessels

South Africa’s 17th Test tour

(December 1993 -

               January 1994)

Fifth Test-playing tour of Australia by South Africa

  (previous tour 1963-64)

The Australian Cricket Board paid Sri Lanka compensation for postponing their forthcoming tour there in order to invite the South Africans. Test-cricketing relations between the two countries were resumed for the first time since Bill Lawry’s side had lost by a four-nil margin in 1970.  En route to Australia, the tourists played the Cricket Association of Bengal’s diamond jubilee tournament for the Hero Cup.

After the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne was washed out by rain, the South Africans achieved a stunning 5-run victory in the second Test.  Setting Australia only 117 for victory, Fanie de Villiers took six wickets. Australia fought back from 75 for eight but Hansie Cronje, coolly directing the South Africans in the field after their captain and leading batsman Wessels was lost to injury, guided his team to the sixth-narrowest finish in Test history.

The South Africans knocked a hole in the dressing wall in frustration at losing the third Test after some contentious umpiring decisions but still drew the Test series. The manager quickly found $100 to settle the damage. Stand-in captain Cronje said the South African players were very tired after the tour which had included not only three weeks in India before arriving in Australia but also the World Series Cup matches against Australia and New Zealand.
