England had
played a Test series against India
before Christmas, winning 2 -1 and drawing the two match Twenty20
series. On the way to New Zealand to begin the main tour after New
Year, they returned to India
and were beaten 3-2 in a five match ODI series before flying on to Auckland.
After a narrow defeat in the warm-up game (a proper first-class
fixture for a change), England
were bowled out cheaply and New
Zealand took a lead of 273, but Nick
Compton’s seven-hour defiance staved off defeat. Rain had taken much time out
of the match as it did at Wellington, and a
placid pitch also helped New
Zealand on this occasion to save the
match.
All-square coming to Auckland for
the final match, it was England’s
turn to bat long enough (143 tense overs) to avoid defeat. Standing at 90 for
4 with a full day’s play ahead of them, Prior’s assured century was leading England to
safety until the ninth wicket went down with 20 minutes still to go, but he
and Panesar held out with one wicket to spare.

The team arrived in India on 3 January for a one-day
series.
They travelled direct from India
following the final ODI , and arrived in Auckland late on Tuesday 29 January.
Stuart Broad came direct from England (where
he had been recovering from a heel injury) because his departure from London
Heathrow was delayed by snow and freezing conditions. He arrived in Auckland a few hours
before the team.
Five players not taking part in the ODI series (Compton, Onions,
Panesar, Pietersen, Prior) arrived in New
Zealand for a training camp led by England team director Andy Flower
ahead of the first-class match against a New Zealand XI.
