Test Cricket Tours - England to New Zealand 2007-08

Tour of New Zealand 2007-08                    Captain : Michael Vaughan

England’s 94th Test tour.

(January - March 2008)

17th Test playing tour of New Zealand by England

  (previous tour 2001-02)

England came back from being one-nil down, to gain a first series victory abroad since South Africa in 2004-05.

New Zealand won the one-day series, helping put their players in the ‘shop window’ for the inaugural Indian premier League (for which England’s players were not available because of playing commitments). They then won the first Test match at Hamilton after which England held a frank team meeting about the lacklustre performance, and captain Michael Vaughan put old hands Hoggard and Harmison out of the team for lack of preparation and vitality. Anderson (7-130 at Wellington) and Broad (5-132) gave much stronger support to Sidebottom, the untiring new leader of the bowling attack.

Controversially, James Anderson was allowed to appear for Auckland and play himself back into form before the second Test. In the third Andrew Strauss batted on and on making a huge century (177) that won the match also saved his England career
