The Chairman of the Australian Cricket Board, Mr Tim Caldwell, announced in Sydney on 18 February 1975 that the projected tour by South Africa was cancelled. Government pressure on the Board ensured there would be no invitation, at which there was some relief in the wider cricket world. Otherwise, Pakistan, India and West Indies would have refused to play Australia.

The Australian Board then began negotiations with the West Indian Board to send a team in 1975-76.

In September 1975 the Marylebone Cricket Club (M.C.C.) and Cricket Council announced that England would not be sending a touring side to South Africa in 1976-77 and the boycott of sporting links with South Africa became complete with the Gleneagles Agreement of 1977.
