Test Cricket Tours - England to West Indies 1993-94

Tour of  West Indies  1993-94             Captain : Mike Atherton

England's 74th Test tour

 January – April 1994)

Eleventh Test-playing tour of West Indies by England

  (previous tour 1989-90)

 (

Ted Dexter resigned as chairman of selectors during the fifth Test against Australia in August 1993 but Ray Illingworth was not approached to take over until December, so TCCB chairman Frank Chamberlain took the chair.

Dennis Amiss, Keith Fletcher and Mike Atherton met in a St John's Wood restaurant to choose the team, which was confirmed at the official selection meeting at Lord's a few days later. Atherton got "exactly the tour party I wanted", making a break with the past. His young team was without Botham and Gower, who had retired, or Gatting, Lamb, Emburey and Gooch. Nine of those chosen to tour India in 1992-93 were discarded.

England fought back from a poor start in the Test series. They lost the first two Tests heavily but, thanks to fast bowlers Fraser and Caddick, were set a target of 194 to win in Port of Spain. Then Curtly Ambrose destroyed the batting and England were all out for 46. Nevertheless a decisive victory was gained at Bridgetown before a stalemate on a flat pitch at St John’s where Brian Lara scored his 375 to beat Garry Sobers’ record which had stood for 35 years.
