Thirteenth Test-playing tour of New Zealand

  (previous tour 1987-88)

 

 

 

       

 

 

Ian Botham was given permission to miss the first weeks of the New Zealand tour while fulfilling his TV and pantomime contracts in England.

A shocking incident of the tour was the injury to David Lawrence, while playing in the Wellington Test. He dislocated his knee so badly he could not play again until 1997.

Withdrawal : Michael Atherton’s selection was subject to fitness tests on stress fractures of the spine. On withdrawal he was not replaced.  Alec Stewart took over from him as vice-captain. Atherton was also unable to join the ‘A’ team tour of the West Indies.

Angus Fraser also withdrew, not having recovered from his hip operation, and his place was taken by Dermot Reeve.

Highlights

 

  Alec Stewart scored a century (148) in the opening Test, while Smith (96) and Lamb (93) came close.

  Phil Tufnell took 4-100 and then 7-47 in the second innings giving him 11-147 in the match at Christchurch

  Chris Lewis (5-31) bowled New Zealand out cheaply at Auckland

  Alec Stewary (107) scored another century, and Allan Lamb 142, in the high-scoring draw at Wellington.
